I tend to agree. Nabokov generally wrote about beauty, love and loss. He used an underaged nymphet because she puts the protagonist into an obvious crisis from the get-go, and lets him point out the basic tragic hilarity of the human situation. It's effectively a comedy.
I think his shorter works are actually more important in a lot of ways. Or at least give a more multifaceted view of his themes.
